About the California spending data on this page

This page opens on the budget authority California enacted — the spending its legislature authorised for the fiscal year — broken down by the departments and programmes it was appropriated to. Enacted budget authority, department spending and federal awards for the largest state budget in the country.

Budget authority is permission to spend and is not the same as money spent. Where the Census Bureau has published closed-book actuals for California, they appear alongside the enacted figures rather than replacing them, and the federal awards flowing into the state are shown separately again, because a large share of state health, transport and education spending originates federally.

Figures on this page are shown for FY2025. ImpactLine does not add its own estimates or fill in values a government has not published — read the methodology and sources for how each figure is assembled.
